Porter was a two-sport star as a Hawkeye. He excelled on both the football field and the baseball diamond. He was a defensive MVP on the football field his senior season, but his passion for baseball led him down that path after his collegiate career came to an end. He enjoyed 10 years of playing baseball at the professional level, with most of his time spent in the minor leagues. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs, but also found playing time within the Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves organizations. His appearances in the Majors came with the Cubs, A’s and Rangers, appearing in the playoffs with the A’s. After his playing career came to an end, he started working on the Florida Marlins coaching staff where he remained for the next 5 seasons. He filled the role of the club’s baserunning instructor as well as their 3rd Base and Outfield Coach. He declined their offer after the 2009 season ended and joined the Arizona Diamondbacks as their 3rd Base Coach. After the 2010 season, Porter interviewed for both the Florida Marlins & Pittsburgh Pirates Managerial openings, but after being passed over he joined the Washington Nationals as their 3rd Base Coach.
