Ferentz came to the Hawkeyes as an outstanding high school offensive lineman but was seen by many as the coach’s son. Before his career was over though, Brian left as a cog that filled multiple holes on the offensive line. He spent most of his time at the Center position, however did play some Guard while at Iowa. After his collegiate career ended, Ferentz attempted to catch on with a team in the NFL as a free agent, eventually signing with the Atlanta Falcons. He remained on the Falcons practice squad his first year in the league, but was released after the 2006 season came to an end. The next season, Ferentz signed with the New Orleans Saints, but only lasted for a month before he was released. It looked to be the end of the road for him, but Brian joined the New England Patriots as a Scouting Assistant for the 2008 season, leading him to be promoted to an Offensive Coaching Assistant in charge of Tight Ends for the 2009 season. Ferentz held the same position in 2010 and received recognition after outstanding seasons by 2 young rookie Tight Ends. After the 2010 season ended, Ferentz was officially given the title of Tight Ends Coach.
