Brad Banks – Iowa Barnstormers – Hawkeye (2001-2002)

April 27th, 2011

Twitter handle: @BradBanks7

The legend of Brad Banks is one that will never be forgotten to Hawkeye fans. He came to Iowa lightly recruited out of Hinds Junior College where he initially played Wide Receiver before switching to Quarterback. When he joined the Hawkeyes, Banks played in 10 games but was never able to crack the starting lineup. His Senior season, Banks was at the helm of one of the most special seasons in Hawkeye history. It started out like any other season with a game against a MAC opponent, this time Akron, before the Hawkeyes would play Iowa State in the third game of the season. In a battle of Quarterbacks, unfortunately Banks came out on the losing end to Seneca Wallace. That would be the only loss of the regular season for Iowa and along the way Banks would set Hawkeye records for rushing yards by a Quarterback (423), completion percentage (100%: 10-10 vs. Northwestern), as well as setting the 2nd best passing touchdown total (26), the 3rd best total offense (2996) and the 9th best season total for yards (2573). The Hawkeyes would tie the Ohio State Buckeyes for a share of the Big Ten title, as due to the schedule, they were not afforded the opportunity to play each other to earn it outright. When the season ended, Banks led the nation in passing efficiency with a 157.1 rating. He would be named 1st Team All-Big Ten, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, 2nd team All-American and would take home the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best Quarterback. He was also invited to the Downtown Athletic Club for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but would finish runner-up to Carson Palmer from USC. Who, it turned out, was the Iowa opponent in the Orange Bowl. The Hawkeyes were outmatched in the Bowl game, but the season was still widely considered one of the best of the Kirk Ferentz era. When his collegiate career ended, Banks signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent but was released before playing with the team. The next season Banks went North of the border and joined the Canadian Football League, signing with the Ottawa Renegades in 2004. He remained with the team through the 2005 season, serving as the backup Quarterback. In 2006, Banks signed with the the Winnipeg BlueBombers and then the following season moved on to the Montreal Alouettes where he remained for two seasons, playing sparingly for both teams. He was out of football in 2009 but attempted to come back in 2010, signing with the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League. He was released before the season started and in 2011 he returned to the state of Iowa and signed with the Barnstormers. He took over the starting Quarterback spot and led the team with 82 passing touchdowns and just under 4000 yards passing to go along with his 11 rushing touchdowns. Unfortunately, those stats did not translate to wins. After their 2011 season came to an end he was named Offensive MVP of the team.

Nyere Aumaitre – Philadelphia Soul – Hawkeye (2004-2008)

April 26th, 2011

Rivals: 3 star T
Scout: 3 star DT

Aumaitre came to the Hawkeyes from New Jersey after dominating at the high school level. Unfortunately, that never translated to playing time with Iowa and he spent most of his collegiate career buried on the depth chart. However, he did not let that end his playing career. He joined the Harrisburg Stampede of the American Indoor Football Association in 2009 and became a team captain. After competing in an open tryout, he was signed by the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL for the 2011 season where he has played sparingly.

Pete Traynor – Iowa Barnstormers – Hawkeye (1998-2002)

April 25th, 2011

Traynor joined the Hawkeyes and like many newcomers, took a redshirt his first year with the team. He did not see any playing time his Freshman season either before becoming a constant on the Offensive Line from the 2000 season on to the end of his career. He was a letter winner for three seasons and also won Academic All-Big Ten two separate times. After his collegiate career ended, Traynor didn’t have to go far before finding his next home. He joined the Quad City Steamwheelers of the Arena Football 2 League. He played for the Steamwheelers from 2002 through the 2005 season. He then moved up to the NFL the following season, joining the Green Bay Packers for four games before being released. He left the Packers and headed overseas to play in NFL Europe for the Rhein Fire, starting all ten games at Center. In 2007, Traynor returned stateside and joined the New York Dragons in the AFL, starting as their Tight End and Fullback. In 2010, Traynor moved to Center and was a stalwart on one of the better lines in the league before being injured near the end of the season. This year he rejoined the Barnstormers where he remains in the middle of the Offensive Line.

Rodney Filer – Iowa Barnstormers – Hawkeye (1993-1996)

April 25th, 2011

Filer came to the Hawkeyes and saw game action his first year on campus. He was a mainstay on the field for Iowa throughout his career and was a Fullback the team could rely on to do a lot of things. Filer was not drafted to the NFL but joined the San Diego Chargers in camp. He did not make the full roster but was designated to their practice squad during the 1997 season. He was out of football after that before joining the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League for the 1999 season. The following year he signed with the Barnstormers again and contributed on a much more consistent basis. In 2001, Filer spent time with the New York Jets on their practice squad as well as playing with the New York Dragons of the AFL. He remained with the NY Dragons through the 2004 season before joining the Las Vegas Gladiators in 2005. He remained in Vegas until 2007 when he moved to the Tampa Bay Storm, but only played in four games. The following season, Filer joined the Utah Blaze and led the team in rushing yards. After the canceled 2009 season, Filer remained with the Blaze during the 2010 campaign. This season Filer returned to the Barnstormers where he was 2nd on the team in rushing, behind only Quarterback Brad Banks. He was named Lineman of the Year for 2011 after the season ended.
