Rodney Filer – Iowa Barnstormers – Hawkeye (1993-1996)

April 25th, 2011

Filer came to the Hawkeyes and saw game action his first year on campus. He was a mainstay on the field for Iowa throughout his career and was a Fullback the team could rely on to do a lot of things. Filer was not drafted to the NFL but joined the San Diego Chargers in camp. He did not make the full roster but was designated to their practice squad during the 1997 season. He was out of football after that before joining the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League for the 1999 season. The following year he signed with the Barnstormers again and contributed on a much more consistent basis. In 2001, Filer spent time with the New York Jets on their practice squad as well as playing with the New York Dragons of the AFL. He remained with the NY Dragons through the 2004 season before joining the Las Vegas Gladiators in 2005. He remained in Vegas until 2007 when he moved to the Tampa Bay Storm, but only played in four games. The following season, Filer joined the Utah Blaze and led the team in rushing yards. After the canceled 2009 season, Filer remained with the Blaze during the 2010 campaign. This season Filer returned to the Barnstormers where he was 2nd on the team in rushing, behind only Quarterback Brad Banks. He was named Lineman of the Year for 2011 after the season ended.
