Nate Kaeding – San Diego Chargers – Hawkeye (1999-2003)

December 29th, 2009

The Iowa City native, definitely left his mark for the Hawkeyes. He is currently the Iowa record holder for most points in a season, most points in a career, most Field Goals in a career, most consecutive Field Goals, most PAT’s attempted in a season & a career, & most PAT’s made in a season, in a career & consecutively. Needless to say, he deserved to win the Lou Groza Award in 2002 as the nation’s best kicker. He also was a 2x All-American & a 2x First Team All-Big Ten. Kaeding followed that up by being selected 65th in the 3rd round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He has been selected as an All-Pro twice in his career, as a reserve in 2006 and to the 1st-Team in 2009.  He was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2007 and kicked a 21 yard game winner to give the AFC the win, as well as being selected in 2009. His career long in the NFL is a 57 yarder against the Buccaneers in 2008. He is considered to be one of the most accurate in the league each year and during the 2009 season he became the NFL’s all-time accuracy leader, with his career accuracy of 87.2%. He finished the 2009 regular season 32-35 on Field Goals with a season long of 55 yards, and after having one blocked against the Raiders he finished 50-51 on PAT’s. In Week 15, Kaeding kicked the game winning 52 yard Field Goal over the Bengals to keep the Chargers on their winning streak.  During the Chargers loss to the Jets in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Kaeding had perhaps the worst game of his career, missing 3 times, equal to his season total for misses. He rebounded during the 2010 season completing 23-28 field goals (82.1%) with one being blocked and a long of 50. Kaeding was injured in the game against the Rams with a groin injury and was sidelined for three weeks. Heading into the 2011 season, Kaeding was looking to help the team meet their high expectations. Unfortunately, he was injured on the first kickoff of the season. He was placed on Injured Reserve with a torn ACL.
