Mitch King – New Orleans Saints – Hawkeye (2004-2008)

January 27th, 2010

Rivals: 3 star LB
Scout: 3 star LB

Mitch King was a fan favorite and a beast among the defensive line while at Iowa.  Whether it was his tenacity or his long blond hair his senior season, King won over the Hawkeye faithful by defying those that doubted his size and earning every tackle he got. King was garnering praise immediately upon taking the field for the Hawkeyes and when his career was over, he had earned First Team All-Big Ten twice, becoming a unanimous selection his senior season.  He was also named the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year his senior season to go along with his selection as a 2nd Team All-American.  When his career was over he again was deemed too small to play football at the next level, however despite being undrafted, King signed with the Tennessee Titans.  He was relegated to the practice squad and did not see any game action.  He was eventually released and signed a future contract with the Indianapolis Colts in January. King was trying to make the team by working out on the Defensive Line as well as Fullback while in camp. A move which paid off when the Colts cut their roster to 53, and slotting King in as the 2nd string Defensive Left Tackle behind Dan Muir. King has picked up 3 tackles after the first 4 games of his rookie season. The Colts released him after the 4th game but they resigned him to the practice squad a few days later. He was cut off the practice squad on November 11, 2010. After remaining unsigned, King was added by the St. Louis Rams to their practice squad for a short time before being cut again in the beginning of December. However, he was signed at the end of the month by the New Orleans Saints to their practice squad which led to him being given a future contract. He will report to camp next season with the Saints. Once the 2011 camp got underway, King was sidelined with a heart condition that was not thought to be a career-ender but was enough to keep him out of some practice time. He was still able to make the team’s 53 man roster to start the 2011 season but was cut after their Week 3 game against the Texans. He was then signed to the Saints practice squad. His 2011 season stats:

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers: 1 tackle
Week 2 vs. Chicago Bears: 2 tackles
Week 3 vs. Houston Texans: No stats
